Abstract
This report presents the White Continent Index for Stability & Excellence — an independent, specification-based assessment of the polar expedition fleet. Each vessel is graded by three instruments, each calibrated to one discipline of the voyage and computed blind to the others: the Polar Luxury Index, an audit of the onboard hospitality product measured in hardware and staffing rather than fare; the Field Experience Score, a measure of off-ship operational efficiency against the constraints of IAATO field practice; and the Drake Comfort Coefficient, a specification-based seakeeping model of the open-ocean crossing. Every score is computed from published naval-architecture specifications and operator filings. No score considers price, and the study accepts no operator funding or sponsorship.

The framework.
3 instruments · never averaged
Each instrument is calibrated to one discipline of the voyage and graded blind to the others, so the trade-offs between stability and excellence stay visible. Each instrument's inputs, composite weights, and engineering are documented in full in the methodology — and every graded vessel stands in the ratings.
Instrument 01
Polar Luxury Index →How the vessel lives. The onboard product, graded independent of fare.
Instrument 02
Field Experience Score →How the vessel explores. Off-ship efficiency against IAATO constraints.
Instrument 03
Drake Comfort Coefficient →How the vessel crosses. Open-ocean seakeeping through the Drake corridor.
Three instruments. Each is computed blind to the others and never averaged — the WISE Report publishes no single "best ship."
What WISE is — and is not.
Comparative · specification-based
WISE is not a cruise review. It is a structured comparative assessment of Antarctic expedition vessels — one that separates three things that are often blended together: how a vessel crosses, how it explores, and how it lives.
Each dimension is scored independently from documented vessel characteristics and published product information. The resulting grades describe the vessel as specified — not the weather on a particular crossing, the performance of a particular crew, or the experience of an individual passenger. WISE is not a safety certification, naval-architectural simulation, passenger-review score or guarantee of voyage experience.
